Dear Tom,

Would you be so kind as to pass a message from me on to the assembled bbers inasmuch as I cannot be there with them?

I hope someone will send me photographs because after four years in cyberspace I still do not know what everybody looks like. Of course photographs can be misleading. In my lab we designed a hair follicle stimulator to test sensation. We needed a photograph of the apparatus in use. Since we did not have a model, my lab assistant took a photograph of my naked foot in the apparatus. The article was often cited and reprinted in several medical texts. I concluded that while most well known neurophysiologists could be recognized by face, in contrast, I could be recognized by foot.

I hope you are having some media coverage of this event. In my view it is a wonderful story involving people helping people cope with a serious life crisis. Though with our media you never can tell. Several years ago, a neighbor of mine, a press agent, wrote to the local 6 o'clock news stations to suggest that they do a story about how I was coping. One of the answers she received was that the station's program director thought such a story was too depressing for the 6 o'clock news. I suppose that means that only murder, rape, child-abuse, fraud and so on are not too depressing.

As I look at the Angel Award that you gave me hung next to my computer, I would like everybody to know that this is no one-way thing. You guys enrich my life. Laissez le bontemps roulez!
